"An instance of Studio One is already running" W10

asked Oct 30, 2020 in Studio One 5 by davekirby1 (340 points)

I did see another question related to this, but didn't really see an answer.

Studio One 5 Prime....after a session, I shut down the program. Window closes. If I try to launch again, it fails and says "An instance of Studio One is already running". Accessing via Task manager will NOT kill it - the only thing I can do is reboot the machine, which always works, but kind of a PITA.

Drivers seem to up to date. This is most perplexing, and yeah, there are bigger problems in this world, but hoping there's a fix to this.

Also I tried to update to the latest version of S1 5 ...I can download the installer, but it errors out when I try to execute. (Maybe I can't update the Prime version???)

PowerSpec B677
Win 10 2004 19041.572
RealTek Audio
Intel Core I5-9400F @ 2.90 ghz
16gb RAM
iRig Keys Pro via USB

Thx to anyone who can help.

Hi.  This sounds like an issue where after quitting Studio One, it doesn't quit properly but ends up in your background processes.  This happened to me a few times before I caught it.  The best thing to test if this is happening is to run then quit Studio One with the task manager open.  So, open task manager, then open studio one.  It should appear in the usual active apps.  Now quit studio one without closing task manager.  Studio One should not be listed under the active apps.  Check by scrolling down and look at the background processes and search for Studio One.  If you find it in the background processes area, right click and end task.  Now try relaunching Studio One.  It should now launch without issues.  I am not sure if this is a windows issue or a Studio One issue.  I am tending towards a Windows issue, since it doesn't happen everytime I run Studio One.  Good luck.  Cheers, Jake.

Hi Jake, thanks for taking the time to respond.

See, that's the issue. I cannot end S1 in Task Manager (see above in my note "Accessing via Task manager will NOT kill it".) I can right click on the background process, tell it to End Task, but nothing happens. It stays active. Same with the button lower right in Task Manager.

Honestly, as a Windows user for > 25 years, I've never seen a program that does this. Task Manager access should allow user to kill ANYTHING (even the stuff you shouldn't kill), but S1 stubbornly resists. It is most perplexing.

Has anyone else found an answer to this? I'm running Studio One 4.5, and the End Task in Task Manager does not work. I have to restart the whole PC every time, and this happens every time I close Studio One.

I got this back from Tech Support a few days ago, haven't tried it yet.

Keith, you may want to give this try.

A Studio One settings refresh may help to resolve your reported issue so please give that a try...

  1. Go to Help>Open Settings folder.
  2. Copy the contents of the folder over to a new folder on your desktop.
  3. Close S1 and delete the contents of the settings folder with the exception of the user.license file as well as the "Extensions" folder.
  4. Open S1 and go to Studio One>Options to reconfigure your settings.

Test to see if the problem is resolved. If it is not, please feel free to copy your settings files back over from the backup that you created in step 2.

*If you are missing presets or Sound Sets after doing this, double-click one of your Sound Sets. They're typically located in Documents > Studio One > Sound Sets by default unless you've placed them in another location.
If you've created custom plugin folders in the browser and don't want to lose those after the refresh, copy the file PluginPresentation.settings from the backup folder in step 2 back to the settings folder before launching Studio One again. Or quit Studio One anytime later and copy it back there.

If you want to keep your Recent Files menu listings and Recent Files Start Page listings, copy the file RecentDocuments.settings from the backup folder in step 2 back to the settings folder before launching Studio One again. Or quit Studio One anytime later and copy it back there.
