VSL and my VSL1818 come up and then I get a click and no input or output What am I doing wrong?

when I open VSL channel to set up for recording I suddenly get a pop on the output and headphone channels and then my VSL1818 doesn't work.  Now VSL won't even come up on my IMac

What OS? VSL will not work with El Cap.
