Recording playback volume is fine, but I can barely hear any drumset sequences written on FruityLoops, for example, imported. And virtual instruments are nearly inaudible even with volume turned all the way up. What am I missing here?

Not sure why your audio files would not be playing back properly, but it's possible that the mod wheel, expression, or volume is turned down on a midi controller and that is affecting your virtual instruments. It's also possible that you haven't instantiated your audio interface in SO3, and so the sound is playing out through internal speakers, for example, rather than whatever monitors you have hooked up to the audio interface.
