baffled, followed instructions in video that answered 'what is auto punch and how do I use it' and it worked... ONE time.  I cannot get it to work again

Use the loop section to mark the bars you like to punch-in and out, then make sure you have punch-in enabled, track is set in record enabled and click the record button on the transport. When the cursor reached the loop marked with the loop, track record will be enabled and start recording till loop end mark.
