There is a short lag between the live sound I'm making and the sound coming through my headphones - should there be?

My laptop is new this year: HP-U3FSA27.

I'm running Windows 10 Enterprise with an Intel(R) Core(TM)i7-6500U CPU @2.50GHz 2.60GHz

6.00 GB Installed Ram.

64-bit operating system

What you hear is called latency.  It's the time it takes for a signal to pass through the audio card buffers and software and get to the output and the speakers.

To reduce it, lower the audio device buffer size as low as possible, as low as it will go before it gets too low and audio starts dropping out.  Start at 128 samples on your audio device buffer size.  You can make that adjustment from your audio device control panel.
