This seems like a massive step backwards to me!

Why lose the browser, folders, presets, all mixer setting in one view, etc?

When we introduced our first rack mixers (the StudioLive RM32 and 16AI) we had to take a new approach to the design and workflow of the control apps. The goal was to achieve a workflow for live sound mixing using touch based devices. When dealing with the various screen sized and touch control, things like buttons and displays need to be designed to accommodate the difference between these devices and mouse based computer workflows. SL-Remote was similar in this regard. It didn't have all the same functionality as VSL because it was designed for iPad.

We did extensive customer focus groups and reviews to ensure we were designing an application that would put the primary mixing functions right up front and move secondary function that aren't typically used in the middle of a live performance a step behind.

This said, we have made several updates to the layout and workflow since version 1.0 based on user feedback to continue and grow the capabilities to address the large variety of customer needs and preferences. You will continue to see changes as the application evolves over time.

If you have some specific requests for things to be brought from the VSL workflow I suggest entering them as individual items in StudioLive Feature Request section here in Answers so it can be voted up and added for consideration in future updates.
