In Ableton it is possible to use the rhythm of one track to manipulate the gate plugin and  impart a rhythm on another track. The track that is being used to gate the other track is not heard but only used to gate the other track.

Yes, you would set up side chain gating using the unheard track to control the gate.

Just out of curiosity are you really asking about Ableton or is that a typo?
