No audio output from headphones on iMac despite good input signal from AudioBox

I'm using an AudioBox USB96 on an iMac. When testing mic the input signal is visible from the AudioBox on the  Mac Sound Input panel, but no audible output from headphones plugged into the native 3.5mm headphone jack on the Mac.
